brown university creative arts center LANDSCAPE
Providence, Rhode Island
The landscape for Brown's new Creative Arts Center forms the central green of the sequence of greens composing the Brown Walk while also relating closely to the new building's design concept. The new building, designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro, was split down its center with offset floors at half levels. As a result the east side of the green is split as well , sloping up as a tilted entrance plaza to the art center's entrance gallery and down to form an amphitheater that continues the building’s interior auditorium. A large polished granite block serves as a landscape bench and building sign. Sustainable design elements include the creation of a green roof for the building and a rain garden to help mitigate storm water runoff.
