This design was proposed for a new memorial landscape at site of the Naval Hospital Cemetery near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Inspired by the maritime life of those laid to rest in the cemetery, the memorial is composed as an abstracted shipwreck. An earthen mound shaped like an overturned ship’s keel has lines of small stone blocks set in lawn portraying those who are laid to rest there. The entire cemetery site evokes a moving Ocean with a sweeping meadow of layered native grasses and flowers forming waves. Other elements include a bowsprit overlook and a broken mast that serves as a flagpole. The site sits along the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway and the north and south-bound lanes of the Greenway bike path become a part of the new landscape, pulled apart and bermed up to form additional waves in the ocean.
